Wood, an old Confederate veteran, 79 years old, died at his home near this place this morning. The remains will be interred tomorrow at his home with the ritual services of Camp John J. Morgan of this place. The Atlanta Constitution, March 12, 1912 ----------------------------- Marion enlisted as a Private in Company G, 43rd Georgia Infantry on March 4, 1862 at Jefferson, Jackson County, Georgia. He was wounded in both legs at the Battle of Baker’s Creek, Mississippi on May 16, 1863 and captured at Champion Hill, Mississippi on the same day [apparently because of the severity of his wounds he was turned back over to Confederate forces]. His name appears on an undated register of beneficiaries of the Association for the Relief of Maimed Soldiers, Richmond, Virginia. Due to the wound to his left leg turning gangrenous, it was amputated on July 28, 1863 in Demopolis, Alabama. He was discharged on February 17, 1864 by order of General Joseph Johnston. Marion applied for an artificial limb on November 1, 1864. From his Certificate of Disability: He was born in Jackson County in the State of Georgia, is thirty-two years of age, five feet eleven inched high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation, when enlisted, a farmer. Marion P Wood and Sarah Holmes were married September 13, 1858 and she was 73 and he was some over 25, not yet 26 when she married him so that she could leave per property to him since he had worked for her and she had no children to leave it to - she died four years and a little over five months after they married. After having been increased to 10 companies, the 16th Battalion had its designation changed to the 13th Regiment Georgia Cavalry. It was led by Captain W. L. Jasper enlisted as a Private in Company G, 13th GA Cavalry (16th Battalion GA Cavalry) on May 14, 1862 in Jefferson, Jackson County, Georgia. He was present or accounted for until surrendered in compliance with the terms of a Military Convention made on April 26, 1865 at Bennett’s House, Durham Station, North Carolina between General Joseph E.
