Survivors include a daughter, Lynda Drake, Comer; a son, Charles Kidd, Carlton; a granddaughter Allison Valdes, and three grandsons, Scott Drake, Chris Kidd and Bryan Kidd. | 1259 | Died at age 80 years, 10 months, 30 days. ------------------------------ During the Civil War William Penn Wood was wounded at the Second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run). He was a member of the 22nd North Carolina Infantry. He lie in the woods for 2 weeks with a bullet in his back before being taken to a hospital. The person who saved his life was "John Kerr" so William named his son John Kerr Wood in honor of the man who saved his life. Research of William 'Bill' Penn Wood, III, grandson of John Kerr Wood, in an email dated 29-June-2009. ---------------------------- William resided in Randolph County where he enlisted in Company I (Davis Guards), 22nd North Carolina Infantry at the age of 18 on March 1, 1862. He mustered in as Private. He was wounded in the shoulder at the second battle of Manassas, Virginia on August 30, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal prior to October 1, 1862. He returned to duty subsequent to October 31, 1862 and was promoted to Sergeant prior to May 23, 1864. He was captured at or near Jericho Mills, Virginia on May 23, 1864. He was confined at Point Lookout yankee prison, Maryland until paroled and transferred to Boulware’s Wharf, James River, Virginia where he was received on March 16, 1865 for exchange. Source: John T. The Company was known as the Cherokee Dragoons. The valuation of his horse was $100. He was detailed as a shoe maker on April 23, 1864 by order of General Stuart. He was hospitalized in Pettigrew General Hospital #13, Raleigh, North Carolina on March 24, 1865 with bronchitis and was captured in the hospital on April 13, 1865 when Raleigh fell to the Yankees.
