The Legion was mustered for six months service within an area bounded by the borders of the state north of a line from West Point, Georgia, to the Elbert County Courthouse, to the Savannah River. It was not a unit composed of members of the Cherokee Nation, except that individual members may have been all or part Cherokee. The Legion did most of its service around Rome, Georgia, and apparently saw no significant action. Service with the Cherokee Legion will qualify its members' male descendants for membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Over 700 men and boys reported for enlistment of which only 200 were needed. Many were "detailed" to get the Legion down to authorized strength. Many men who enlisted were deferred because of their age, being below 18 or infirm. Others who enlisted were soon conscripted into regular service in the Confederate Army. Some enlisted in one company only to be mustered into another. Some went on to serve in the regular Confederate service after their service in the Legion ended, so this record may not be all that is available. __________________ Pinckney Wood owned property in the Earney Road section of East Cherokee. He is buried at Big Springs Methodist Church Cemetery (with a marker) near Earney Road. There are two adult and two children's unmarked graves adjoining Pinckney's. There is known marker for his wife. reference: Cherokee County Heritage Book Committee, The Heritage of Cherokee County Georgia 1831-1998., (Waynesville, NC: Don Mills, Inc., 1998). page 592 __________________ excerpt from the book, "Annotated Obituaries from the Cherokee Advance, 1880-1938" [Pinkney F.] Wood died at the residence of G.T. Fowler on the 21 of June. His remains were interred in the cemetery at Big Springs. He was in his 83rd year and had been a citizen of Cherokee for many years. He was stricken with paralysis last November but now is at rest, free from pain and suffering. (Page 3 Col 4) [Born 3 Sep 1809] __________________ Pinkney enlisted as a Private in Company D (Captain Dean’s Company), Cherokee Legio, Georgia State Guards on July 22, 1863 for 6 months. Her name was Nancy Kirby Lyle. Nancy was born in Va. around 1795. I believe she married My ggggrandfather Charles Lyle around 1810 in Spartanburg. After they were married they moved to Coweta Co. GA. Nancy and Charles had 15 children. Nancy died in 1877. Charles was born in Spartanburg around 1784 and was the son of Maher Lyle. Maher fought with Washington in the revolutionary war.
